I've taken the liberty of moving to the new image editor on Blogger, hopefully you're familiar with it, the main change being that when you upload your images you'll get a little bar once uploaded offering a range of sizes and position. The image above (taken yesterday) is at X-large and centred.

Feel free to invite other enhusiasts to contact me and be added as authors, we have space for up to 100! The more people posting the livelier and more interesting it will get.

Also it would be good to change the header images on a regular basis and feature the work of those of you that take dragon & damsel images so please send through anything you think is suitable for a header image. I have taken the new header image from Flickr and it is a Creative Commons Licenced image by Robbie, find his photostream here.

Good dragon hunting for 2010.

Alan

Common Blue Damselfly (female)
Banks Pond, Northumberland (NZ203743)
21/05/2010
5+ noted flying within 10m of water.

Common Hawker - Linton Pond In November

Grabbed this shot this morning of what is a very late Common Hawker that was flying around the reedbed at Linton Pond this morning. ID so that it gets hidden under a little humour. As a birder the worst views you can get of a bird are AHV's (Arsehole Views) as the bird heads off into the sunset/distance/trees/bush (delete as appropriate). I find myself pressing the delete button on loads of AHV images coming out of my camera. I aim to capture good shots with head and bill and all the key ID features or interesting 'face on' shots.

So when it comes to dragons & damsels I've been doing the same thing turns out I should be doing exactly the opposite, AHV's are the holy grail of dragon & damsel photography.

Back at Summerhouse Lane yesterday I picked up several darters and a few damsels, I got home and sat down to pick over the ID and 'rarity fever' set in so below are second emergence Red -veined Darters and the first Northumberland record Scarce Emerald Damselfly.....

except of course they aren't. With a little help from county recorder Harry Eales my feet are back on planet earth and my new BBC career as world's foremost dragonfly expert on hold.

The devastating news that I'm focusing on the wrong end came in HE's opening sentence "I've run both your pictures through my Photoshop programme but I cannot see enough detail on the anal appendages of either specimen to give a considered opinion."

He added "In reality, photographs are not a good way of identifying, or rather separating species, which are very similar in shape and colour when the defining characteristics separating them are as small as slight differences in the genitalia."

So above are male & female Common Darter and probable Emerald Damselfly.

Common Darter 3-4 in grassland; Emerald Damselfly 2 (one male, one female)

14 August 2009

Observed By Alan Tilmouth

Summerhouse Lane Pond. Having an hour spare this afternoon and the forecast showers staying clear I had a wander over to check it out. Interesting lake, man made I suspect, lots of logs and stones around the edges and a bit of emergent vegetation at one end. Good numbers of Common Blue Damselfly and a smaller number of Blue-tailed Damselfy. I was pleased to get some Common Darter perhaps 3-4 mostly on logs and stones at the north end of the lake offering some reasonable photo opportunities.

Common Blue Damselfly, In Tandem?

Common Darter, (male ?)

Common Darter, immature male or female.

Common Darter, (female ?)

Common Darter three-four, Blue-tailed Damselfly two male, Common Blue Damselfly (count 35 in 3m.)

Observed by Alan Tilmouth

The Abyssinian, Ashington, Northumberland NZ251886.

23/07/09.

Grid References

Harry Eales our Dragonfly county recorder for Durham & Northumberland is having some technical issues posting but he has passed over a file of Grid References which I've added as a post and can be accessed via a link in the Useful Things sidebar. As well as posting sighting records using the post guidelines I also hope that this will be a place where no one feels daunted by the expertise on show, whether in ID or photography. I'll pin my colours to the mast, I am very new to Odonata and enjoying the learning curve but I have a huge amount to learn so whilst I hope that this site benefits the study and recording of Dragonflies & Damselflies in the region, I also hope it benefits individuals like me in Reception class so to speak.
So above we have a Damselfly, I think it is a female Blue-tailed Damselfly of the form infuscans obsoleta, if anyone would like to confirm this in the comments or correct the ID I would be grateful. The image was taken near Summerhouse Lane Pond the site in Northumberland of the recent Red-veined Darter influx that was the inspiration behind the creation of this weblog.

Common Hawker (Aeshna juncea)

Ian Forrest

Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park, Billingham NZ4825

13/07/2009

At least four present.
